Select Your Pumpkin
To ensure that your pumpkin doesn’t rot before Halloween, try to pick one without cuts and
bruises. Finding one with a flat, smooth side makes attaching the pattern and carving easier.

Removing the Goo
Draw a circle around the stem about 4 inches or so in diameter. Now, with
the knife at a 45 degree angle, cut out the circle. (Cutting at
an angle ensures that the lid does not fall down into the pumpkin.)
Use your hand to remove all strings and seeds. Next, use a scraping
tool (a large spoon or pumpkin scoop) to scrape the inner pumpkin walls smooth.

Attach the Pattern
Using tape, attach your pattern to the flattest side of the pumpkin. If you are having
trouble keeping your pattern flat against the pumpkin, make small tears in the edges of the
paper to help it lay better on the pumpkin’s round shape.

|
Transfer Pattern:
Poke holes through the paper along the pattern lines at 1/4 inch intervals. Once
completed, remove the pattern and you will now have a "dot-to-dot" pattern in the
skin of the pumpkin. Make sure to keep your pattern as a reference when carving.

Begin Carving
Pick a starting point on your pumpkin’s pattern and insert pumpkin saw
(never carve with a knife).  While holding the saw like a pencil, begin sawing
out each section of your design. To saw curved areas, do not twist
the saw but gently turn it as you continue sawing
(this will help prevent the saw from breaking).

Lighting:
Place a small, lit candle inside your pumpkin. Replace lid and Let the candle burn for
a few moments Remove the lid and find the dark, singed area. Cut a 1 inch hole in the darkened area to create a chimney, allowing the candle’s
heat to escape.

Helpful hints:
|
Hint 1: |
If your poked design is difficult to see, rub cornstarch into the holes to turn them white. |
|
Hint 2: |
Carve the smallest areas of your design first. |
|
Hint 3: |
To make carving easier, cradle your pumpkin in your lap for more stability while you are carving. |

Remember, pumpkin carving is a wonderful family activity, but please remember adults should always supervise children when using the tools or lighting candles.
